Are you thinking of making the move from Illinois to Indiana? Or even wondering why so many are taking the leap across the state line?

In this blog, I am going to tell you my top 5 reasons to take the leap and make the move!

Ok, here are my top 5 reasons:

1. Homes are less expensive!

In total, the average home price in Indiana is about 20% lower than Illinois. As one of your largest, if not THE largest asset, this makes a huge difference in your finances. Not to mention that in a lot of cases the size of our lots are larger, giving you bigger yards and more space in general.

2. Taxes! Taxes! Taxes!

Taxes in Indiana are less expensive across the board! I’m sure you’re probably thinking about property taxes, but did you know that Indiana is less expensive in every single tax category? Yep! Property taxes, income tax, business tax, and even sales tax. You will pay less on any kind of taxes in the great state of Indiana. This adds up to thousands and thousands of savings each year.

3. Lower Cost of Living

I talked about how home prices are less expensive and how taxes are lower too. In addition to those, your utilities, gas, groceries, and almost all of your basic needs are less expensive on this side of the state line. I remember chatting with a girlfriend about her kid’s swimming lessons vs. my kid’s and was shocked to see even something like that being way more affordable in Indiana!! Your dollar just goes a lot farther over here for sure.

4. Commute time to Chicago

Depending on which Northwest Indiana town you’re thinking about moving to, the commute time is shorter than some of the Illinois suburbs. For instance, in Munster or Dyer, you’re about 33 minutes from the city. When you compare that with Naperville’s 51 minutes, you’d be saving about 3 hours per week off of your commute time! On top of that, we have public transit options like the South Shore train and over here in Valpo we have the super affordable and comfortable Valpo Dash bus line that even offers free WiFi, bathrooms, and FREE parking where it picks up and drops off in Valpo. Again, that lower cost of living in general!

5. Incredible Schools!

According to greatschools.org, Illinois and Indiana preform almost identically in terms of test scores, college readiness, and ACT/SAT scores. Our schools are awesome! Plus, we have incredible universities that become much more affordable when you’re attending via in-state tuition rates!

Now, there are loads more reasons to make the move--these are just my top 5. You may also be interested in what is involved in the process and how you actually make the move.

In my next blog, I’ll walk you through the first few steps in the process and the ducks you’ll want to get in a row to make the move.
